Free Packaging Utility

Turn packaging components into material-specific reporting weights.

Enter the packaging you actually use, its material, component weight and usage rate. The calculator converts those inputs into kilograms by material and packaging type and creates a reusable Packaging Ledger for the next compliance step.

Build your Packaging Ledger

Add each physical packaging component separately.

01

Define the calculation scope

The volume figures below should cover the same reporting period and business scope.

Leave unallocated if these volumes combine several markets.
Used by components linked to product-unit volume.
Used by shipment and e-commerce packaging components.
02

Add packaging components

A jar, lid, label, retail box, grouped carton, shipping box, filler or mailer should normally be entered as a separate component.

Calculation logic

The arithmetic stays visible and auditable.

The calculator does not apply hidden packaging assumptions. Each component is calculated from the figures you enter.

STEP 01

Calculate component count

Components can follow product volume, parcel volume or a known exact period count.

Volume × component quantity ÷ frequency
STEP 02

Calculate component weight

The number of components used is multiplied by the measured weight of one component.

Component count × grams per component
STEP 03

Aggregate the ledger

Results are summed by physical material and by packaging type.

Σ grams ÷ 1,000 = kilograms

PPWR packaging types

Use packaging type and physical material as separate data fields.

The packaging type describes what the packaging does. The material field describes what it is physically made from.

ARTICLE 3

Sales packaging

Packaging forming the sales unit presented to the end user. Often described operationally as primary packaging.

ARTICLE 3

Grouped packaging

Packaging grouping several sales units, whether sold as a group or used for stocking and distribution.

ARTICLE 3

Transport packaging

Packaging used to facilitate handling and transport and to protect sales units or grouped packaging.

ARTICLE 3

E-commerce packaging

Transport packaging used to deliver products to end users through online or other distance-sales channels.

What the calculator does not decide

Physical weight is only one layer of EPR compliance.

Producer status

The calculator does not decide which economic operator is the producer in a Member State.

National reportability

A country may require additional packaging, material or waste-stream classifications.

Composite-material allocation

The tool does not invent a paper/plastic split when reliable component data is unavailable.

EPR tariff

Weight calculation and fee calculation remain separate. Tariffs belong in the EPR Cost Estimator.

Packaging calculator FAQ

Calculate the weight without inventing the regulatory answer.

No. The calculator measures packaging quantities. Producer status, country registration, EPR scheme participation and reporting obligations must be determined separately.

Yes. E-commerce packaging can be entered as a separate packaging type. Under the PPWR it is transport packaging used to deliver products to end users in online or other distance sales.

Set the usage rule to one component every 12 product units. The calculator applies that ratio to the product volume entered for the calculation period.

If you do not have a defensible material split, enter it as composite or multi-material packaging. Do not invent a material allocation. Country-specific classification can then be verified separately.

Only when the calculation is scoped to a specific destination country. A combined calculation remains unallocated until destination-country sales volumes are assigned.

This calculator performs a physical packaging-weight calculation. It does not determine producer status, country registration, EPR scheme participation, national material classification or legal reporting treatment. Those questions must be verified against the applicable Member State framework.
